ViziLite® Plus Screening can save your life
ORAL CANCER
The evidence regarding traditional oral examination as an effective screening technique remains controversial. Recent randomised clinical trial concluded that the evidence to support or refute the use of oral examination as a screening program was insufficient.
Therefore patients rely on doctors (oral and maxillofacial surgeons) to spot early warning signs. ViziLite® Plus is a screening tool for the medical and dental professional on which they can rely on it. It is recognized that three different risk groups for oral cancer can be identified.
i. Increase risk Patients age 18-39 without lifestyle risk factors
(do not smoke, do not drink)
ii. High risk Patients aged 40 and older without lifestyle risk factors
Tobacco users (any age, any type)
iii. Highest risk Patients age 40 and older with lifestyle risk factors
(tobacco use, alcohol consumption)
Patients with history of oral cancer
Chemiluminescent light based system (ViziLite® Plus) use the application of a diffuse chemiluminescent light source to visualize abnormal oral mucosa not visible under normal incandescent light.
A 1% acetic acid oral rinse is used to remove surface debris and slightly desiccate the oral mucosa before direct examination with the light source. Under illumination, normal epithelium absorbs the light with abnormal tissue reflects the light. Application of Tolmidine Blue (TBlue) stain to aid in further assessment.
Lesions stained with TBlue can be viewed clearly even without the ViziLite® device. An intra-oral photograph for inclusion in the patient record is taken. If necessary a biopsy is taken from the abnormal site.
ViziLite® is the only FDA-cleared medical device for use in the screening of oral abnormalities in patients at increased risk of oral cancer.
Early detection tools such as mammograms, Pap-smear and PSA tests have greatly reduced death rates for breast, cervical and prostate cancers. Now ViziLite® Plus is a careening of oral abnormalities content to reduce death rates for oral cancer.
The ViziLite® Plus examination – using chemiluminescent light, is intended only as an adjunct to traditional oral examination to improve identification, evaluation and monitoring of while oral mucosal abnormalities in population at increased risk for oral cancer.
