Stroke Rehabilition

“Stroke is a clinical syndrome characterised by rapid onset of focal neurological signs that lasts more or less than 24 hours. This definition includes stroke from both infarction and haemorrhage. Stroke can also be described as the most common cause of physical disability in the UK and accounts for 12% of all deaths. From a statistical point of view, approximately 25% of men and 20% of women in the UK with an age of 85 years old suffer a stroke, as 25% of stroke occurs in people of working age.

Stroke is best regarded as a syndrome resulting from several different diseases, all of which cause sudden-onset disruption of the blood supply to a particular part of the brain. About 80% are caused by primary cerebral ischaemia resulting in infarction; 20% are caused by cerebral haemorrhage. Of the latter, three-quarters result from intracerebral haemorrhage and one-quarter from sub- arachnoid haemorrhage. Even subtypes such as ischaemic stroke and intracerebral haemorrhage have multiple pathologies, which may have different risk factor profiles and different treatments”.
