Sciatica

The term sciatica describes the symptoms of leg pain that may be caused by irritation or even general compression of one of five nerve roots of the lumbar spine that give rise to the sciatic nerve. Sciatic nerve pain can also be caused by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve itself. People suffering from sciatica can feel the pain in their lower back, buttock area, and/or various parts at the back of their leg and/or foot. The symptoms of sciatic nerve irritation can become severe and can be characterised as:

Ø numbness

Ø muscular weakness

Ø pins and needles

Ø tingling sensation

Ø burning sensation

Ø difficulty in moving or controlling the leg

Physiotherapy treatments can dramatically reduce the symptoms of sciatica by the use of exercise therapy, manual therapy and electrotherapy modalities.
