Plantar fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the plantar fascia. In simpler words, "Plantar" refers to the bottom of the foot; "fascia" refers to a type of connective tissue, and "itis" refers to "inflammation”. Many patients with plantar fasciitis have a heel spur on the front and bottom of their heel, which are pain free. Heel spurs are soft, bendable deposits of calcium that are the result of tension and inflammation in the plantar fascia attachment to the heel.

Causes of plantar fasciitis include:

Ø Inadequate flexibility in the calf muscles

Ø Lack of arch support

Ø Being overweight

Ø Suddenly increasing activity

Ø Due to the repetitive nature of walking, plantar fasciitis may be a repetitive stress disorder

Physiotherapy can examine and assess the feet, help the mechanics of the feet during walking, decrease the pain around the area, and suggest different kinds of orthotics and insoles that can reduce or even eliminate abnormalities of the feet.
