Osteoporosis is a disease characterised by a low bone mass and deterioration of bone architecture
Statistics in the United Kingdom show that:
• 1:4 women between the age of 60 or older, will break a bone
• 1:2 at risk
• 1:12 men get Osteoporosis after the age of 50
• 60,000 hip fractures – 20-25% in men
• 50,000 wrist fractures
• 40,000 spine fractures / per year
• Osteoporotic fracture every 3 minutes.
• Osteoporosis increases fractures by 10% per year
These fractures can result from inactivity which can reduce the bone mass density, and increase the risks of falling
Physiotherapy can provide or maintain proper posture and prevent frequent new vertebral fractures, increase bone mass density through resistant exercises, decrease spinal abnormalities, decrease pain, and help prevent falls by increasing balance & strength.
