Nutrition & Dietetics

Dietary advice

It has long been accepted that ‘we are what we eat’ and it is now more evident than ever that diet and health go hand in hand. Nutritional intake plays an integral role in the prevention, management and treatment of disease. Chrysovalantou clinic offers individualised nutritional assessment and modification for a variety of medical and lifestyle conditions, including those listed below.

Healthy eatingHealthy eating and a balanced diet
Diet and health go hand in hand. If following a healthy balanced diet is important to you but you are not sure if you are doing it correct, we can help you by assessing your current nutritional intake and suggesting changes for improvement.
Weight loss and weight gain

Overweight and obesity is a major risk factor in the development of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer.

We offer personalised nutritional and lifestyle changes for losing weight and keeping it off.

Weight loss during an illness is very common however excessive weight loss is detrimental.

Nutritional support will lead to weight gain and provide essential nutrients to speed up recovery.

Type 2 DiabetesType 2 diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic disease which can either be managed exclusively by diet or in conjunction with medication and/or insulin. Type 2 diabetes is characterised by high blood glucose levels which need to be kept under control. Nutritional intervention is vital for the management of blood glucose levels and the subsequent prevention of the complications associated with diabetes, such as cardiovascular disease, nephropathy, neuropathy and retinopathy.

Following a healthy balanced diet is recommended and emphasis is given on foods with a low Glyceamic Index.

Dental HealthDental Health

Our teeth are the first to come into contact with the food we eat and our dietary habits have a direct effect on the health of our teeth. Dietary changes can prevent dental carries and erosion especially in those of the most susceptible age group 4-18 years.

Avoiding sugary food and drinks between meals and before bedtime is one way to protect your teeth from tooth decay.

Healthy HeartHeart health

We offer lifestyle and nutritional advice for managing a whole host of heart threatening conditions including high blood pressure, high cholesterol and raised triglyceride levels.

The DASH diet, high in fruit and vegetables and low in fat, sugar and salt, has been proven to be the most effective cardio protective diet.

During Cancer TreatmentDuring cancer treatment

People’s responses to food during their cancer treatments vary greatly from continuing to enjoy eating to not being able to eat at all. Eating well during cancer treatment gives you energy, makes you feel better and keeps your body strong throughout.

Nutritional support can provide significant relief from the side-effects caused by cancer treatments (radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgery), especially those effecting the mouth and gastrointestinal tract.

IRSIrritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

IBS, also known as spastic colon, has no detectable organic source and is characterised by symptoms including abdominal pain, altered defecation (diarrhoea, constipation or both) and bloating. Lifestyle and dietary causes are highly individual and our Registered Dietitian can help you detect the causes of your IBS and offer suggestions for managing your symptoms.

Decreasing or increasing the amount of fibre in the diet is usually enough to manage symptoms.

Gastro DisordersGastrointestinal disorders

We offer dietary advice for the management of a plethora of gastrointestinal disorders including constipation, Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, Coeliac disease, Crohn’s disease, Ulcerative colitis, intestinal resection and others.

Common causes of GORD are alcohol, spicy foods, citrus fruits and fatty foods.

AllergiesFood allergies and intolerances

Living with food allergy or food intolerance can be difficult. Food allergies are usually diagnosed at a young age and exclusion of the specific food is inevitable. Food intolerances however are more difficult to diagnose and often require the help of a Registered Dietitian. We can help ensure your diet is optimal and balanced while providing practical ways to manage your food allergy/intolerance.

recovery surgeryPre and post-surgery

Eating well before surgery can build your body up to withstand the harsh side-effects after surgery.

Recent European guidelines (ERAS) recommend nutritional intervention both before and after surgery so as to prevent unintentional weight loss and enhance recovery.

We can ensure you are well nourished and well hydrated pre- and post-operatively.
