For many years patients never had much choice as to what type of filling they would receive when a hole in their tooth was to be filled.

The most commonly used material in the past was dental amalgam, which is often referred to as a ‘silver’ filling. Due to many advances in dentistry over the last decades, teeth can now be filled with tooth coloured (‘white’) fillings that offer excellent strength, durability and cosmetic results if done properly.

The major scientific advance that made such fillings possible was the development of a bonding system that could efficiently stick composite filling material to natural tooth. This has offered patients an excellent, cost efficient option to restore many dental problems with a simple visit to the dentist.
